Merrill Iowa History
"There used to be 60 trains a day through here."
Merrill Iowa hasn't always been here. Neither has Plymouth County. First came the United States of America. This whole area used to be a prairie. That means, if you did live here, and you took a walk, all you would see for miles would be tall grass and wild flowers. That is if you could see over the grass. There are many accounts, here in Merrill, of the grass being so tall that riders could tie it in a knot across the backs of their horses. During those years Plains and Woodland Indians were the two main lifestyles in Iowa. The Plains Indians had to roam vast prairies following buffalo herds in the summer for their food and clothing. Life for them, here around Merrill, during the hunt, was a survival campout.
